Quarter Three Happenings
English 10 Honors
We began our research project in January that will culminate in an 8-10 page paper, based on academic research. Students will need a 75% on their final draft in order to pass 10th grade English and move on to their junior year English class. My goal is to finish the paper by the end of 3rd quarter so that students can have 4th quarter to make revisions if need be.
We also have been reading Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, one of my favorite plays. It's not an easy read, but with guided instruction, comprehension and discussion questions, and vocabulary, I believe students will have an easier time. For this quarter, students will have to pick a Shakespeare play to read outside of class and complete a major works data sheet on it, due March 31st.
English 10CP
We are finishing our King Arthur mini-unit and moving on to other examples of myths and legends. Soon we will begin our research project that will culminate in a 6-8 page paper based on academic research. Students will need a 75% on their final draft in order to pass 10th grade English and move on to their junior year English class. My goal is to finish the paper by the end of 3rd quarter so that students can have 4th quarter to make revisions if need be. Most of the paper will be completed in class.
12 Film
Class started last week and already students seem excited about the upcoming semester. We just finished watching Christopher Nolan's film The Prestige on rival magicians. Next we will cover the history of film before moving on to chapter one of our textbook, The Art of Watching Films. Students will have several film reviews to complete based on movies they watch in class as well as movies they watch out of class.
Students will also finish their senior project, which they began in the summer or fall. Portfolios are due on April 29th. Students must complete the research paper, portfolio, and in-class presentation before they are able to complete an after school presentation. This last presentation gives them the quarter credit for the senior project and enables to graduate on time with their class.
AP Language
We finished our unit on the economy and are now in the middle of our unit on gender. This quarter we will be finishing our work in the TLC textbook to prepare for intensive AP exam practice quarter four.
Students recently submitted the second rough draft of their research paper and will be working on the final draft soon. The research paper should be finished by the end of February so students can focus on the exam in May.
A reminder: deposits for the AP exam are due by February 21st. The non-refundable deposit is $15. The remaining $31 will be due on March 28th. This totals $46 for the exam. Dona Page, the AP Coordinator, will receive all deposits/payments prior to the due date in her office in the guidance suite. Checks or money orders should be made payable to MRHS. Students with financial need may qualify for a fee waiver for the deposit and should inquire with Ms. Page.
