      Reading Rainbow episode. Students are introduced to the world through the use of libraries. Visit the Library of Congress & get a tour. An animated Conan the Librarian shows how to get a library card. The main story features Alistair who is on his way to return his library books when he is captured by aliens.

    • Bats at the Library

      A group of bats fly into a public library through an open window and have all kinds of fun.  The little ones play at the water fountain and copier machine before settling down for a magical story hour that includes "batification" of many children's classics.  This story celebrates books, libraries and the joys of reading.  Narrated by the author.  Includes a segement with a conversation with the book author, Brian Lies.

      Reading Rainbow episode. Levar points out the importance of being oneself and striving to be all that we can be. A boy tells about how he started a library in his small town. The main story is about a kindergartner and her father who change places for a day. Bea works in an office and her father goes to school.

      The Caldecott & Geisel Award winning author/illustrator discusses his art and inspiration.  Different chapters on the Pigeon books, Knuffle Bunny, and Elephant & Piggy.

    • How to use an Almanac
      20 mins.  gr4+  VHS
      Gives students a glimpse into an almanac through showing students preparing to participate in a World Almanac tournament.  Students help each other identify keywords and use the index and how to skim and scan for information. 

    • I stink

      Ever wonder what it's like to be a garbage truck?  Based on the Ladybug Award winning title "I stink" by Kate & Jim McMullan, this story also includes an alphabet of garbage.

    • Internet searching skills: navigate the web with ease

      Hosted by Eleanor Mondale this is a comprehensive guide to searching the world wide web. In logical, step by step strategies, Eleanor and her virtual friend Jane explain how to access, research, evaluate and communicate Internet resources into results.

Learn how to locate information in the library, use of book's index & table of contents, book care, the correct way to turn the pages & mark places and the way to carry books outside in wet weather.

      23 mins. Grades 2-6   Produced by Schlessinger. Students will gain an understanding of the most widely used classification system for school and public libraries in the world. This helpful program describes how the Dewey Decimal System is organized, and how students can use it effectively to find what they are looking for in the library. Shows a Follett OPAC and demonstrates the use of the "power" search.

      Produced by Schlessinger. Students will learn that there is much more to a library than just the books on the shelf. Students will discover what kinds of information can be found and how libraries organize their materials. This program includes the Follett OPAC, and will help students develop effective skills for finding and using information.
