Native Americans & Abenaki Indians of New Hampshire

The Native American Indians that lived in New Hampshire were part of the Algonquian Indian family and included the Abenaki and the Pennacook. The Abenakis included the Pequawket and the Ossipee. The Pennacooks included the Amoskeag, Nashua, Piscataqua, Souhegan, and Squamscot. The Abenaki nation was a member of the Wabanaki Confederacy that controlled much of New England and the Canadian Maritimes. The Abenakis themselves are original natives of New England, mostly from New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. After the European colonists came, many of them fled to Canada. The Abenaki today live on two reservations in Quebec. There is no Abenaki Indian Reservation in the United States.
