STOP!
DON'T DO IT!
Don't fix that damaged book!
Sometimes accidents happen. Sometimes a book is old and crumbly. Sometimes a book becomes a chew toy. Sometimes books are not bound well at the manufacturer.
When an Emerson School Library book is damaged, please return all the pieces. Please do not tape or glue the book. I emphasize this in all classes, but students are sometimes embarrassed to return a damaged book.
Each year Emerson students learn about the importance of book care. We all want our library collection to be in good condition. Students are taught the proper way to turn the pages of books and we discuss the general safe handling of books, however backpacks are rough on books…AND…backpacks are part of life at school.
A certain amount of damage is expected and many books need repair each year. Special tape and glue must be used for all repairs to ensure a longer shelf life for the book. Elmer's type glue is not good for books. It is made from natural ingredients and encourages mold and mildew in books. Many cellophane tapes have an acid base and that acid eats away at the paper.
So enjoy those library books with your Emerson student, but don't fix them!
Thanks!
