The third column refers to the total number of classes in the core content areas - English,
reading or language arts, mathematics, science, foreign languages, civics and government,
economics, arts (visual, theater, music), history, and geography. From the total number of core
content classes, the fourth column focuses on classes taught by teachers who are not certified by the
state (either through the traditional process or an alternative certification route) to teach these
content-area classes, or who have not completed a highly qualified teacher plan.  It is possible
that a teacher may be certified by the state, but not be highly qualified according to federal requirements,
because she or he is not certified in the content area. The fifth column refers to the total number of
teachers teaching in the core content area. The last column is the total number of teachers who have
not met the highly qualified teacher requirements.
