CAL SIOP* Bulletin focuses on differentiation in a K-12 context, offering discussion of various aspects of differentiation, as well as practical suggestions for the classroom.
CREATE recently released a brief on Response to Intervention (RTI), an instructional service delivery model for providing early academic assistance to students who are experiencing difficulty in school. This brief outlines the tiered structure of RTI and how it can be tailored to effectively address the needs of English learners. It touches on methods of assessment and instructional considerations, and introduces educators to the implementation of RTI with English learners. The brief offers useful information to current SIOP practitioners, as well as those interested in learning more about how the SIOP Model can be utilized in the context of RTI. It also describes SIOP techniques that can be used to effectively differentiate instruction for English learners.
New SIOP Lesson Plan Targeting Differentiated Instruction
A number of SIOP features address the issue of differentiated instruction and suggest specific techniques that support differentiation in lesson planning and delivery. Teachers proficient in the SIOP Model are able to anticipate the different needs of their students according to language proficiency and prepare accordingly. They are also able to differentiate during lesson delivery as they assess their students’ mastery of the lesson’s language and content objectives. To provide you with more examples of how SIOP lessons can be adapted to meet the needs of language learners at different levels, we added one new lesson plan to our resources. Check out the new lesson plan on our website.
Differentiated Anticipation Guides
New Differentiated Anticipation Activity
Anticipation activities provide students with an opportunity to preview concepts and language that will be encountered in a lesson or text. To provide you with a specific example of how an anticipation activity can be differentiated to meet the varying needs of students, CAL SIOP facilitators developed three versions of an anticipation activity for use with students at different English proficiency levels as well as an explanation of each version. The “Explanation of Activities” provides an overview of each of the anticipation activity documents (A, B, and C versions) that range in the degree of scaffolding, and offers a number of other suggestions concerning broadly applicable differentiation strategies for the classroom.
* The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model* is a research-based and validated instructional model that has proven effective in addressing the academic needs of English learners throughout the United States.
