Thesis Driven Essay Competency In order to meet this competency, you must write five types of essays. The final drafts of your essays must be included in your portfolio. Two of these essays will be used as the assessment for the two novels you will read for your literature competency. *The persuasive and expository essays work nicely with literature analysis. Types of Essays Descriptive Before writing your descriptive essay, identify exactly what you want to describe. Often, a descriptive essay will focus on portraying one of the following: · a person · a place · a memory · an experience · an object Persuasive* · When writing a persuasive essay, your purpose is to convince your audience to embrace your idea or point of view. Narrative · A narrative essay is a piece of writing that recreates an experience through time. · A narrative essay can be based on one of your own experiences, either past or present, or it can be based on the experiences of someone else. · In addition to telling a story, a narrative essay also communicates a main idea or a lesson learned. Reflective A reflective essay is a piece of writing that basically involves your views and feelings about a particular subject. The goal of a reflective essay is to not only discuss what you learned, but to convey the personal experiences and findings that resulted. Expository* Expository essays are simply essays that explain something with facts, as opposed to opinion. Samples of expository essays include · Essays that described how to do something. · Essays that analyze events, ideas, objects, or written works. · Essays that describe a process. · Essays that explain/describe an historical event.
